Each winter, frozen pipes cause billions in insurance losses. Now, for the first time, this risk is being addressed at scale—marking Ting’s expansion from fire to freeze across more than 1 million homes.
GERMANTOWN, MD — December 3, 2025 — Whisker Labs, the leader in AI-powered fire prevention, today announced the next evolution of its award-winning technology, Ting: expansion into water loss prevention. Each year, water damage and freeze-related incidents cost insurers in the U.S. more than $15 billion, and frozen-pipe events represent a major and growing portion of those losses. Starting this winter, Ting will extend beyond electrical fire prevention to also help prevent damage from frozen pipes—one of the most costly and preventable home hazards.

This new capability builds on Ting’s trusted presence in over 1 million homes by leveraging its built-in temperature sensing, power outage detection, and AI-powered insights to detect frozen pipe risk in real time, well before damage occurs. When risk is detected, homeowners receive a timely alert and clear, in-app guidance to take preventive action.
“Ting has already demonstrated its ability to protect families, preventing tens of thousands potentially devastating electrical fires before they could start,” said Bob Marshall, CEO and cofounder. “Now, we’re using the same proven technology to help stop frozen pipe damage before it starts. It’s another step forward in our mission to keep families and homes safe and a new way we deliver meaningful value to our insurance partners by reducing preventable claims.”
Why It Matters: Frozen Pipe Losses Are Severe And Largely Preventable
Frozen pipes can be unpredictable and devastating. In some years, losses skyrocket. From August 2022 to August 2023, State Farm alone paid out over $806 million for more than 32,000 frozen pipe and water damage claims, averaging $25,000 per claim.
Unlike traditional water sensors or smart thermostats, Ting uniquely combines real-time in-home temperature data with grid intelligence to identify frozen pipe risk from two critical scenarios: power outages and unexpected heat loss. When a home or neighborhood loses power, Ting’s electrical safety network detects it instantly—well before indoor temperatures reach dangerous levels—enabling early alerts and preventive action. And when power remains on but indoor temperatures drop abnormally, Ting identifies the problem from within the home, signaling potential heating failures or localized cold zones.

In either scenario, Ting doesn’t just alert—it guides. Homeowners receive clear, situation-specific instructions through the Ting app: from restoring heat to shutting off water in high-risk areas, each step is designed to minimize risk and prevent costly damage. This closes the loop on prevention, helping avoid water damage before it begins.
This dual visibility into both the home and the grid makes Ting the only solution capable of accurately detecting and helping prevent frozen pipe losses at scale.
Prevention That Scales
This new feature is available immediately to Ting customers with an active sensor and continues to reinforce Ting’s growing role in year-round home protection. Ting now addresses two of the most frequent and expensive causes of home damage: electrical fires and frozen pipes.
