Partnering with emergency responders, insurance, utilities and more, Ting Insights delivers real-time, hyper-local grid intelligence to help build a safer, more resilient future.

Prevention has always been our mission. In 2019, Whisker Labs launched Ting to stop electrical fires before they start, one sensor and one home at a time. Today, with more than a million sensors across the country, we’ve built something unprecedented: the most comprehensive IoT network monitoring the safety and resilience of the U.S. electric grid. With 94% of homes within one mile of a Ting sensor, the AI-powered Ting network delivers real-time visibility into the grid—at a depth and resolution never before possible.

This intelligence powers Ting Insights, which, together with our growing ecosystem of partners across emergency response, insurance, home management, and utilities, enables smarter, faster decisions that strengthen community resilience.

Ting Insights: 94% of US homes are within a mile of a Ting sensor

“Everyday life depends on a stable, reliable grid, but until now, the visibility to ensure that just hasn’t existed,” said Bob Marshall, CEO and co-founder of Whisker Labs. “Ting Insights changes that, delivering real-time, location-specific grid intelligence that helps detect and inform on electrical problems before they become disasters.”

In the sections ahead, we’ll explore how Ting Insights fills a critical grid visibility gap—covering how this unprecedented grid sensor network operates, the intelligence it delivers, and the real-world ways our partners are putting that data into action.

A Stressed Grid, A Growing Problem

Grid resilience has declined 100% since January 2022 - Chart of US Grid Faults

The electric grid is becoming increasingly complex—and increasingly stressed. As new technologies and growing electrification add layers of demand, the grid’s aging infrastructure is struggling to keep up. At the same time, climate change is driving more extreme weather with destructive storms, heat waves, and even cold snaps that push the system past its limits and leave communities more exposed when it fails. In some cases, those failures can even spark catastrophic wildfires. Further, evolving threats from physical and cyber-attacks compound the pressure.

Data from the Ting sensor network shows a concerning trend: grid resilience is declining—grid faults per home per month have doubled between January 2022 and June 2024—highlighting the growing urgency for proactive solutions.

How Ting Insights Works: From Sensors to Smarter Decisions

Ting Insights analyzes 28 trillion electrical measurements per second.

Effectively managing today’s grid risks requires sharper, real-time insight. Ting Insights delivers exactly that—analyzing trillions of precise grid measurements every second. What begins as measurements from individual sensors becomes a distributed, intelligent system monitoring grid health continuously across the country. The network detects early-stage grid stress and faults that can lead to wildfires, pinpoints power outages with unmatched accuracy, and identifies power quality problems that affect reliability, energy efficiency, and equipment performance.

Ting Insights provides four powerful, real-time solutions that support faster decisions and targeted response to grid failures. Our partners are using this intelligence across high-stakes sectors where precision and speed matter. Here’s how we’re making an impact together:

Power Outage Insights

The most accurate, location-specific data on when and where outages occur

Real-time, hyper-local power outage insights including start time, duration and areas impacted provided by Ting Insights

The Ting sensor network delivers the most precise, location-specific view of power outages and restorations, pinpointing exactly when and where they happen, minute by minute, neighborhood by neighborhood.

This data doesn’t just improve awareness—it can make a life-saving difference. During severe weather, accurate real-time outage maps and alerts help first responders prioritize the most critical situations. RapidSOS and BES are bringing power outage context to 911 centers by integrating Ting Insights directly into emergency response systems. Chris McIntosh, CEO of BES shared, “Whisker Labs brings a unique layer of insight that strengthens the situational awareness we deliver to our clients. Their revolutionary, real-time power outage data adds critical context to rapidly evolving situations, allowing BES to transform complex information into actionable intelligence when it matters most.”

For insurers, real-time power outage data brings new certainty to claims verification, enabling faster and more accurate resolution. Adaptive Insurance is leveraging Ting Insights outage and restoration data to modernize the insurance process. For its GridProtect power outage parametric product, Adaptive verifies power outages in real time – eliminating manual claims steps and enabling faster payouts. Arik Yelovitch, CTO and Co-Founder of Adaptive shares, “By leveraging real-time, hyper-local power outage data from Ting Insights, we can deliver speedier financial support to businesses when they need it most.”

For homeowners and the service providers who support them, power outage insights are vital to comfort and safety. Flat, a white-label home management platform, uses Ting Insights to deliver timely outage alerts. “Integrating Ting’s real-time monitoring into Flat’s AI-driven portal exemplifies how technology can proactively safeguard households,” added Kamil Gondek, Co-Founder of Flat. “Together, we’re pushing the boundaries of smart home innovation—enabling instant alerts, deeper analytics, and a more resilient homeowner experience.”

Power Quality Insights

Neighborhood-level visibility into power quality problems that impact reliability, energy efficiency, and appliance longevity

Ting Insights: Revealing power quality problems that impact reliability and cost.

Outage data tells you when the power goes out, but that’s only part of the story. Even when the lights stay on, poor power quality can quietly cause major problems by damaging appliances and reducing energy efficiency. Ting Insights provides neighborhood-level visibility into power quality problems that often go undetected, but have serious consequences for grid performance and home systems.

Reporting on metrics like Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and the Consumer Power Quality Index (CPQI), Ting Insights surfaces persistent voltage irregularities that affect reliability, drive up energy waste, and shorten appliance lifespan. This isn’t just theoretical. As reported in Bloomberg, Ting data revealed that Chicago has some of the worst average THD levels in the country – a metric with real consequences for its residents and businesses. For utilities, insurers, and service providers, this level of granular power quality intelligence opens up new opportunities to understand and improve the everyday experience of electricity.

Grid Fault Insights

Critical, early-detection of grid fault activity that can spark wildfires

Ting Insights: Comprehensive Fault Analysis - Critical, early grid fault detection that can help prevent wildfires.

While power quality problems quietly degrade reliability, grid faults present an immediate, high-stakes risk that can spark wildfires. These faults often go undetected until it’s too late.

Ting Insights provides early, location-specific visibility into these fault conditions. By analyzing signals across our distributed sensor network, Ting can help identify infrastructure problems at their earliest stages, before the dangerous spark.

Ting fault data is already proving critical for retrospective wildfire investigations showing its potential to help prevent the next disaster. In January 2025, The New York Times reported on retrospective analysis of Ting data that showed grid fault activity leading up to the devastating Eaton Canyon fires in Los Angeles. Similarly, following the 2023 Maui wildfires, The Washington Post revealed that Ting data correlated with the precise time and location of ignition captured by a bird sanctuary camera. In both cases, Ting Insights showed that the electrical grids in LA and Maui were stressed for many hours prior to the sparks that likely resulted in the devastating fires.

With growing collaboration from utilities, Ting grid fault detection can become a vital line of defense providing life-saving intelligence that protects people and communities.

Electrical Fire Hazard Insights

The largest verified dataset of remediated electrical fire risks

Ting Insights: Recorded more than 20,000 fire hazards.

Ting’s nationwide sensor network is even more than a monitoring tool. It’s also the foundation of the most comprehensive dataset ever assembled on electrical fire risks in the home.

With more than 20,000 potentially devastating electrical fires prevented, we’re uncovering actionable root-cause intelligence on where and why electrical fires happen. These insights reveal which hazard types are most common, where in the home electrical fires typically begin, which appliances and devices are involved, how home age correlates with fire risk, and even how incident rates vary by state.

This real-world, verified data is helping insurance partners, safety organizations, code-making bodies and researchers better understand fire risks and prevent them before they start.
